With the mica lamp shade, it gives a soft, soothing-to-the-mind amber glow to the room.For studying, I guess it wasn't the very best choice, but I love it.The stand has a cheap "antiqued bronze" finish (which really doesn't look so very cheap unless you get up close and stare at it), that is surprisingly heavy and solid and matches my d
