(More customer reviews)The 40 watt reading lamp that is "included" is really just the smaller/bendable light - 40 watts does not make for a good reading light, in my opinion, but it's not quite a deal-breaker.
This lamp was packed to the point of overkill - that is to say, within the shipping box was another box - within this box, yet another box.Within the third box the lamp was surrounded by more Styrofoam than I thought possible - even the insides of each shade were encased with the stuff (one minor gripe is that the foam that was used is the type that basically explodes into tiny pellets that stick to everything - fortunately for me, I happened to assemble this in the garage - otherwise there would have been much to vacuum).Assembly was straightforward and clear instructions were included.Of note, the "piece" that affixes the shade to the stem/arm is a nice screw-on thing that isdecorative - in a nutshell, if one were to look "up" into the shade, to the base of the light bulb, one would be able to see a nice "extra attention to detail" with a sort of rosette-looking connector (don't know how else to describe it really - instead of a simple "washer with a head" it's a detailed "washer" that matches the color of the base/trunk and tries to match the "bumps" of the trunk - nothing too thrilling, I know, but it was a nice touch :)
Pros: speedy shipping (FedEx) thanks to being a Prime member; well-packaged; both shades are thick glass with a mottled appearance, a deep cream with "splotches" of warm brown - a sort of all over large-scale crazing, but without looking damaged; not a plastic piece to be found; large heavy based (reminds me of a sunflower pedals); individual switches on each shade stem; whether illuminated or dark, it is a striking fixture - especially for the price.
Cons: four separate parts to the trunk that screw into one another - one section looks like the "sheen" is in the wrong direction - shiny vs. matte - nothing horrible, I noticed it when I assembled it, so now I notice it all the time; 40 watt bulb max for the reading lamp; slight damage to the cloth-covered lamp cord that feeds the top lamp - not through to the wiring, but I wrapped it in electrical tape for good measure; the entire thing tends to lean a bit - not sure if it's the reading lamp making it slightly off balance - I taped a very small piece of the cardboard under the base and it's level without the "lift" being visible.
My tip - the "maximum bulb" stickers that are always placed in the worst location of such items were very easy to peel free in one piece and without leaving the typical sticky gummy residue on the inside of the shades - I was able to reattach them to the bottom of the lamp, just in case the information is needed.
Would I buy it again?Yes, but probably not as a reading lamp.
